How to accept MTN MoMo for a paid Telegram group

If your fans live in Ghana, Uganda, Cameroon or Côte d'Ivoire, many of them will want to pay with MTN MoMo. Taking the money is the easy part: share a number, a merchant code or a payment link. The work starts after that, checking every payment, letting fans in, and removing them when their time is up. This guide covers the do-it-yourself options, where they break, and how to keep fans renewing.

How do I accept MTN MoMo for a Telegram group?

Share a MoMo merchant code or a payment link, check each payment in your own MoMo account, then send the fan a single-use invite link and note their expiry date. MoMo payments are approved with the fan's PIN each time, so remind fans before their plan ends. VIPpass, built for mobile money, can run entry, expiry and reminders for you.

In short

  • Fans can pay you on your MoMo number, through a merchant code or with a payment link, but you still have to check each payment and add people yourself.
  • Never trust a MoMo message a fan forwards you. Only money in your own MoMo account counts.
  • Each MoMo payment is approved with the fan's PIN, so renewals do not happen by themselves. Every renewal needs a reminder.
  • With VIPpass, fans pay through your link, the VIPpass Bot lets them in and removes them when their plan ends, and you are paid in your local currency.

Why your Telegram group needs MTN MoMo

MTN runs MoMo in more than a dozen African countries, including Ghana, Uganda, Cameroon and Côte d'Ivoire. MTN reported 70.8 million monthly active MoMo users in the first half of 2026. For many of your fans, it is how they pay for everything on their phone. If paying you means finding a card first, many of them will not bother.

Telegram's own way to charge for a channel is a monthly fee in Telegram Stars. Telegram launched Star subscriptions in August 2024, and you turn them on from an invite link in your channel settings. But Stars are bought through in-app purchases in the Telegram apps, and Telegram's terms for Stars say buying and using them may be restricted in some countries. For a fan who pays for everything with MoMo, that is an extra hurdle.

There is also a rule for bots. Telegram says bots must use Telegram Stars for digital goods and services sold inside its apps. That is why MoMo payments for a Telegram group usually happen outside Telegram: on the fan's phone, through a merchant code, or on a payment page in the browser.

For a side-by-side look at both ways of getting paid, read Telegram Stars vs mobile money.

The do-it-yourself ways to take MoMo

Most creators start with one of three setups. All of them take the money. None of them lets the fan into your group or removes them later.

SetupHow the fan paysWhat you still do by hand
Your personal MoMo numberSends money to your phone numberCheck the payment, send an invite, track the expiry, remove the fan
A MoMo merchant code (MoMo Pay)Pays your merchant code from the MoMo menu or appThe same, plus matching each payment to a Telegram user
Payment link from a payment companyOpens a link and approves a prompt on their phoneSend the invite, track the expiry, remove the fan

Your personal number

This is where almost everyone starts, because it costs nothing to set up. The downside is that every fan sees your name when they pay, your personal and business money get mixed, and renewals end up as awkward messages from your own number.

A merchant code

A merchant account keeps your fan income apart from your personal money and gives fans a code to pay instead of your number. In Uganda, for example, MTN lets individuals register a merchant wallet from their phone, and lists fees of 1% for individual merchants and 2% for business merchants. Check MTN's current terms in your own country before you sign up.

A payment link

Payment companies such as Paystack let businesses take mobile money on a web page. On Paystack's mobile money channel, the fan gets a prompt on their phone and authorises the payment with their PIN, and Paystack lists MTN in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire among the networks it supports. That saves you checking your MoMo account, since the payment company confirms the money. Check the provider's rules on what you can sell before you sign up, and remember the link only takes payment: you still let fans in and out yourself.

How fans pay in each country

The steps differ a little by country, but the pattern is the same: the fan picks the payment option, enters your code or number and the amount, and confirms with their MoMo PIN.

  • Uganda. MTN's own guide to paying with MoMo: dial *165*3#, choose Merchant Code, enter the code and amount, confirm, then enter the MoMo PIN.
  • Ghana. Fans pay from the MoMo menu, for example by dialling *170#, choosing MoMoPay and entering your merchant ID, the amount and a reference, then their PIN. TechCabal's guide walks through it.
  • Côte d'Ivoire. MTN sells the service as MoMo, with MoMo Pay for paying merchants. Fans pay from the MoMo menu or app and confirm with their PIN.
  • Cameroon. The service is known as MTN Mobile Money, or MoMo. Fans pay from the MoMo menu or app and confirm with their PIN.

Price in the fan's own currency, and offer a short plan as well as a longer one. Here is the kind of ladder many creators start with:

Where the do-it-yourself setup breaks

Doing it by hand is fine for your first ten fans. By fifty, it costs you money every week. These are the problems creators run into most.

  • Fake MoMo messages. A fan can forward, edit or type out a message that looks just like a MoMo confirmation. If you let people in from a message they send you, some will never have paid.
  • Missed expiries. You have to remember the date each fan paid and remove them when their time runs out. Most creators fall behind, and expired fans keep reading for free.
  • Leaked links. An invite link you send to one fan can be forwarded to a whole group of friends, who join without paying.
  • Matching payments to people. A payment from a name you do not recognise does not tell you which Telegram account to let in. Each one becomes a conversation.
  • Chasing renewals. You end up messaging fans from your own number to ask for money, which few creators enjoy and many skip.
  • Being always on. Fans pay at midnight and expect to get in at midnight. If you are asleep, they wait, and some ask for a refund.

Why MoMo payments are one-off, and why reminders matter

A card can be charged again every month. MoMo works differently. Whether the fan pays from the MoMo menu or approves a prompt from a payment page, they confirm each payment with their PIN. Nobody can do that for them, so every payment needs the fan to act.

That changes how you run your group. Most fans who leave do not decide to leave. They simply forget their plan is ending. A reminder at the right time is often the difference between a fan who renews and one who drifts away.

  • Remind fans a few days before their plan ends, so they can top up their MoMo wallet if they need to.
  • Remind them again the day before, and on the day. Keep each message short, with the price and how to pay.
  • Make renewing one step. A fan who has to ask you for your merchant code again is a fan who may not renew.

Plan length matters too. Weekly plans suit fans who are trying you out, but they mean four renewals a month to chase. A 90-day plan lets loyal fans pay once and stop thinking about it.

Set up your Telegram group so only paying fans get in

Whichever way fans pay, a few Telegram settings stop most leaks.

  • Make your space private. Use a private channel or a supergroup with no public @username, so it can only be joined through an invite link.
  • Require admin approval. Telegram invite links can be set to let people in only upon explicit approval of an admin. A forwarded link then only sends a join request, and you decide who gets in.
  • Limit and expire links. Private invite links can have an expiration date and a usage limit. If you send each fan their own link with a limit of one, it stops working once they use it.
  • Revoke old links. A revoked link can no longer be used to join, so clear out links you shared in the past.
  • Keep a list. Write down each fan's Telegram name, the date they paid, the plan and the end date. Check it every day.

If you run a basic Telegram group, convert it to a supergroup before adding any bot. For the full setup, see how to set up a paid Telegram channel.

What about Telegram Stars?

Stars work inside Telegram, but the money takes a long road to reach a MoMo wallet. InviteMember, which supports Stars, says in its guide to Stars that creators receive about $0.013 per Star, that earnings can be held for up to 21 days, and that they are withdrawn on Fragment in Gram (formerly Toncoin). It also says fans may pay 50% to 100% more per Star because of app store and Telegram commissions.

Telegram's terms for bot developers add that Fragment may be unable to issue rewards for certain users or in certain countries. After that, you still have to turn Gram into cedis, shillings or francs yourself.

Where VIPpass fits

VIPpass does the parts that break when you grow. You share one VIPpass link. A fan opens it, confirms they are 18 or older, picks a plan and pays, with no account to create. It takes under two minutes.

VIPpass is built for fans who pay with mobile money, as well as card and USDT, depending on their country. Which networks and methods fans can use depends on the country and on which payment providers have approved VIPpass there, and the methods are listed for each country as it opens. See mobile money payments for how checkout works.

  • No screenshots or forwarded messages. A fan only gets in once the payment provider confirms the money.
  • The VIPpass Bot lets fans in. It is an admin of your channel or supergroup and approves the join request of each paying fan.
  • Expired fans are removed within minutes. The VIPpass Bot also removes anyone who joins without paying, through an old link or by being added by hand.
  • Reminders go out for you. Fans are reminded 3 days and 1 day before their plan ends, and on the day. They renew with /renew and check their date with /status, and mobile money is never charged automatically.
  • You are paid in your local currency. Cedis, Ugandan shillings or CFA francs go to one mobile money wallet or bank account in your own verified name, after a short holding period.

VIPpass is free to start and takes a service fee on each payment, which already includes payment provider costs. On a $10 plan with a 5% fee, you either add the fee so the fan pays $10.50, or take it from your earnings so you receive $9.50. See pricing for both plans.

Which option fits you

There is no single right answer. It depends on how many fans you have and how much time you want to spend on payments.

OptionBest when
Personal number or merchant codeYou have a handful of fans and time to check every payment and remove people yourself
A payment link from a payment companyYou want payments confirmed for you and are happy to manage entry and expiry by hand
Telegram StarsYour fans already pay by card or app store, and a monthly price suits you
VIPpassYou want fans to pay in under two minutes, and entry, expiry and reminders handled for you

If you are comparing tools, compare Telegram subscription bots by how fans can pay and how you get paid, and see Telegram payment methods in Africa for the wider picture.

VIPpass also works for your WhatsApp groups and Snapchat private stories, so all your paid spaces sit in one dashboard. Every creator is verified first, with a government ID, a live selfie and a short video reviewed by a person.

FAQ

Questions creators ask.

Something else on your mind?

[email protected]

Can I accept MTN MoMo directly in Telegram?

Not for a paid group. Telegram's built-in subscriptions use Telegram Stars, and bots must use Stars for digital goods sold inside the Telegram apps. MoMo payments for a Telegram group happen outside the app, through your number, a merchant code or a payment page.

Can fans pay for my group with MoMo through VIPpass?

VIPpass is built for mobile money, and fans pay with mobile money, card or USDT depending on their country. The networks and methods for each country are listed as it opens. More on payments.

Can MoMo charge my fans automatically every month?

Not in the way a card can. Each MoMo payment is confirmed with the fan's PIN, whether they pay from the MoMo menu or approve a prompt from a payment page. That is why renewal reminders matter.

How do I know a MoMo payment is real?

Only trust the money you can see in your own MoMo account, never a screenshot or forwarded SMS. With VIPpass, a fan only gets in once the payment provider confirms the money.

What should I charge for a Telegram group?

Many creators offer a short, low-priced plan for new fans and a longer plan with a discount, for example GH₵30 for a week and GH₵100 for a month in Ghana, or 1,500 FCFA and 5,000 FCFA in Cameroon. How much to charge for a VIP group walks through it.

How do I get paid on VIPpass in Ghana, Uganda, Cameroon or Côte d'Ivoire?

Your earnings show in your dashboard as soon as a fan pays. After a short holding period, you withdraw them in your local currency to one mobile money wallet or bank account in your own verified name.
