The free-to-VIP funnel: how to get people to pay for your VIP group

Most fans will not pay for a group they have never seen. The creators who fill paid spaces run a simple funnel: a free space that shows what members get, a clear reason to pay now, one link that is easy to find, and renewals that keep the people who already paid. This guide walks through each part for Telegram, WhatsApp and Snapchat.

How do I get people to pay for my VIP group?

Run a free channel that shows a sample of what members get, and pin your payment link in it. Give fans a reason to pay now, such as a launch offer or a regular paid-only drop. Put the same link in your bio and stories. Then remind members before their plan ends, because renewals are where a paid group grows.

In short

  • A free preview shows fans what they are paying for. Post samples and results there, and keep the full content in the paid space.
  • Give fans a reason to pay now: a launch offer, a few lifetime spots, or a regular drop that only members get.
  • Use one link everywhere: your bio, your stories, the pinned post in your free channel.
  • On Snapchat there is no free preview channel on VIPpass, so your public profile does the teasing.
  • Renewals matter as much as new fans. On the same plan, a member who stays for three months pays as much as three who leave after one.

How the free-to-VIP funnel works

A funnel is the path a fan takes from first seeing you to paying you every month. For a paid group it has four stages:

  1. Attention. Fans find you on your public socials: your posts, stories and bio.
  2. Free space. They join a free channel or follow a public profile, where they see what your paid space is like.
  3. Checkout. They tap your payment link, pick a plan and pay.
  4. Renewal. Their plan ends and they pay again, or they leave.

Most creators put all their effort into the first stage and none into the last. That is backwards. Attention is the hardest part to control, and renewals are the easiest. A fan who already paid once knows your content is worth it.

The free space is what links attention to checkout. It works the same way on Telegram and WhatsApp. Snapchat is different, because there is no separate free channel to point fans to.

What to post free and what to keep paid

Your free space has one job: to make fans want what is behind the paywall. If it gives away everything, nobody pays. If it shows nothing, nobody trusts you enough to pay. Aim for a sample that proves the quality and leaves fans wanting the rest.

Post in your free spaceKeep for paying members

Your schedule: what members get and whenEarly access and the regular paid-only drop

A useful rule: free posts show that something good happened, paid posts show what it was. A free post that says "members got the full version of this an hour ago" does more selling than one that gives the whole thing away.

Keep your posting regular in both spaces. A free channel that goes quiet for two weeks tells fans the paid one is quiet too. A paid space that is busier than the free one is what makes members stay.

Set up your free preview on Telegram and WhatsApp

On both platforms, the free space is a separate channel or group from your paid one. Never use the same space for both, or paying fans have nothing extra to show for their money.

Telegram

Create a second channel for your preview. Make it private, joined by invite link, not a public @username channel. A public channel can be read by anyone without joining, and some content is not allowed to be publicly viewable on Telegram. Pin a post at the top with your payment link, your plans and what members get.

If you already have a busy free group and want to start charging, you have two choices. Turn the existing group into your paid space and move free fans out, or keep it as your free preview and start a new paid space. The second is usually easier, because nobody loses access to something they had.

WhatsApp

On WhatsApp, the paid space has to be a group, because a channel does not let you choose who follows it. That makes a WhatsApp channel a good fit for the free preview. On a channel, WhatsApp says a follower's phone number stays private, and only they can see which channels they follow, so fans can watch without sharing their number with a crowd.

Post your samples in the channel and add your payment link to the channel description and to your posts.

Link the preview to your paid space

On VIPpass you can link one free Telegram or WhatsApp channel or group to each paid space. When a fan opens your checkout, they see a Free preview button beside the payment options and can open it without paying. So a fan who is not ready yet can look first instead of leaving.

Your dashboard shows how many preview visitors go on to pay. That tells you whether your free posts are doing their job. If lots of fans open the preview and few pay, your free posts are either giving too much away or showing too little. Change one thing at a time and watch the number.

Snapchat: your public profile is the preview

Snapchat works differently. A private story is shown only to the people you add, and Snapchat offers no official tools to change that list from outside the app. VIPpass never uses unofficial ones. So on VIPpass there is no free preview channel for Snapchat spaces.

Instead, your public Snapchat profile does the teasing. Post what you would post in a free channel: short samples, a look at your week, and reminders that members get more in your private story. Put your VIPpass link wherever your profile and your other socials let you.

Follow Snapchat's Community Guidelines in everything you post, public and private. They apply to all content on Snapchat, and your public profile is the part anyone can see and report.

There is one upside. A private story has no invite link to leak, because only the people you add can see it. Your free teasers can be bold about what members get, because the full content only reaches fans you added yourself. For the full setup, read how to charge for a Snapchat private story.

Give fans a reason to pay now

A fan who likes your free space can still put off paying forever. These are the triggers that turn "maybe later" into a payment today.

  • Teasers of what members got. After each paid drop, post a short note in your free space: what members got, without the content. Fans see what they missed, which gives them a reason to join before the next one.
  • A launch offer. When you open a new paid space, offer a lower price for the first week or the first members. A 7-day plan is a low-risk first step for a fan trying you out.
  • Limited lifetime spots. Offer lifetime access to a set number of fans, say so in public, and take the offer down when the spots are gone. Keep the number small and keep your word, or fans stop believing your next offer.
  • A regular paid-only drop. Pick a day and a time, and drop something members get every week. A fixed schedule gives fans a date to join by, and gives members a reason to stay.
  • A clear choice of plans. Offer 7, 30 and 90 days so fans can pick their own level of risk. A fan who would never commit to 90 days may happily try 7.

Use one trigger at a time. A free space that runs a launch offer, a lifetime sale and a countdown in the same week looks desperate, and fans learn to wait for the next deal.

Price matters too. If your 30-day plan is $10, make sure the free space makes that price look fair. For a method, read how much to charge for a VIP group.

Renewals are the real growth lever

Every new member costs you effort: posts, stories, offers. A renewal costs almost nothing. If half your members leave every month, you have to replace half your group just to stand still. If most of them stay, every new fan adds to your total.

Many members do not leave on purpose. They forget, or their plan ends on a busy day. Mobile money is never charged automatically, so fans have to choose to pay again, and they need a nudge at the right time.

  • Remind fans before their plan ends. VIPpass reminds fans 3 days and 1 day before their plan ends, and on the day. On Telegram the reminder comes from the VIPpass Bot, and fans can renew with /renew and check their date with /status. For WhatsApp, reminders go by SMS or a WhatsApp message link. For Snapchat, by SMS.
  • Remove expired members on time. If expired fans keep watching for free, paying fans notice, and nobody has a reason to renew. On Telegram the VIPpass Bot removes them within minutes. On WhatsApp and Snapchat, VIPpass puts them on your remove list.
  • Give members a reason to stay. Your regular paid-only drop is a renewal tool as much as a sales tool. Mention what is coming next week, so a fan whose plan ends on Friday knows what they would miss.
  • Reward the fans who stay. A 90-day plan at a better price, or a lifetime offer for long-time members, turns your most loyal fans into your steadiest income.
  • Watch who expires this week. Your dashboard shows every member and their expiry date, so a quiet week does not surprise you.

Treat expired fans as your warmest leads. They already know your content and already paid once. If you keep your free space, they can still follow it, see your teasers and come back when they are ready.

FAQ

Questions creators ask.

Something else on your mind?

[email protected]

Should my free preview channel be public or private?

On Telegram, make it private and joined by invite link, not a public @username channel. Some content is not allowed to be publicly viewable on Telegram, and VIPpass flags public previews for review. On WhatsApp, a channel works well as your free preview.

Does a free preview channel count toward my VIPpass space limit?

No. Previews do not count toward your live-space limit on either plan. The Free plan includes 2 live spaces, and Pro has unlimited ones. See pricing.

Can I have a free preview for my Snapchat private story?

Not inside VIPpass. Free preview channels are for Telegram and WhatsApp spaces only. Use your public Snapchat profile as your teaser instead, and follow Snapchat's Community Guidelines.

How much should I post for free?

Enough to prove the quality, not enough to replace the paid space. Post excerpts, your schedule and notes on what members got. Keep the full content, early access and direct replies for paying members.

How do I know if my free channel is working?

Watch how many fans who open your preview go on to pay. On VIPpass, your dashboard shows how many preview visitors go on to pay, so you can change your free posts and see whether more fans join.

Why do members stop renewing?

Often they just forget, or expired fans keep access and nobody sees a reason to pay. Remind fans before their plan ends, remove expired members on time and give members a regular drop to look forward to.
